Description

Municipality of Ravenna Flag

Gold and red: the Ravenna flag

The flag of Ravenna is split into two vertical halves, golden yellow at the pole and red at the fly. These are the two fields of the city's coat of arms, the gold and red that the people of Ravenna find on the Comune's coat of arms and gonfalone.

The two fields of the coat of arms

The Comune's Statute says that Ravenna's gonfalone and coat of arms are the historic ones: two fields, gold and red, with two lions facing a green pine tree laden with golden cones, uprooted and set right on the line dividing the colours. The shield is divided vertically, like the flag: gold on one side, red on the other. The flag drops the lions and the pine and keeps the two colours, clean.

The pine and the pinewood

The pine of the coat of arms appears on a seal of 1469 and has not changed since, except in its drawing. Over the centuries scholars have seen all sorts of things in it, from the classical pine-cone motif to the cult of the goddess Cybele. The simplest explanation is also the loveliest: the pine recalls the landscape around the city, set in its great pinewood. The two lions, as often happens in heraldry, are there to hold it up.

Gold and red, where they come from

For the gold and red, people have thought of the colours of the da Polenta, the family that ruled the city for more than a century and a half, or of those of the Republic of Venice, which governed it directly from 1449 to 1509. These are hypotheses, not certainties. In 1937 the decree that fixed the coat of arms added the city's Porta Aurea on the crown and the motto «Felix Ravenna».

City of mosaics, city of Saint Apollinaris

Ravenna was a Roman municipium, a port of the empire with Classe, and between the 5th and the 8th century it lived its years of greatest fortune, which left the mosaics the world comes to see. Its patron is Saint Apollinaris, and the Statute itself records that his feast falls on 23 July: it is Ravenna's day, and the right day for gold and red at the windows.
