Valle d' Aosta Flag

Black and red: the flag of Valle d'Aosta

The flag of Valle d'Aosta, the Aosta Valley flag, is as simple as a flag can be: two equal vertical stripes, black next to the pole and red on the other side. No coat of arms, no lettering. Yet behind those two colours lies the story of a people who defended their identity.

Two colours from an ancient seal

Red and black were put together for the first time in 1942 by Canon Joseph Bréan, on the cover of the booklet «I grandi valdostani». He took them from the sixteenth-century seal of the Duchy of Aosta: a black shield with a silver lion and a red chief with a silver cross. Take away the lion and the cross, and a red and black shield remains.

On the border, in August 1944

The Aosta Valley Resistance chose a flag of two horizontal stripes, red above and black below, sewn by some women from Valtournenche. According to Vincent Trèves's account, around 20 August 1944, at the Tête Grise border post, the partisans raised it singing «Montagnes valdôtaines»; on the other side of the border, the Swiss gendarmes presented arms and lowered their flag, then raised it again together with the new one as a salute.

From horizontal to vertical

After the war the red and black went with every demonstration for autonomy, and the Region has used it since its beginnings. Around the mid-1950s the two horizontal stripes became vertical, with the black on the pole side: the form still seen today.

Official since 2006

Regional law no. 6 of 16 March 2006 made official the form consecrated by use: a cloth divided vertically into two equal sections, black and red, with the black at the pole. The same law wants the flag on schools and town halls, and flying on the last Sunday of February, the Feast of the Aosta Valley.

Who chooses it

For anyone from the Aosta Valley or with roots among these mountains, for families who emigrated, for a town hall, a school or a Pro Loco, for mountain huts, alpine guides and ski clubs, for village festivals and fairs, for a restaurant or a shop selling products from the Valley. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
