From a drawer to the shop: Vexonaut and 59 flags anyone can order

You have a folder full of flags you drew yourself. Clean lines, the right colours, every proportion checked twice. Nobody can fly a single one of them.

This is the story of one designer who took the folder out of the drawer. Vexonaut, a vexillology enthusiast, has 59 flags on sale in our shop, on a page of their own. You will see what Vexonaut does, what we do, how the share on every sale works, and the five steps that put your designs on the same road.

The mistake: stopping at the file

Most people who draw flags stop at the file. They post it on a forum, collect a few compliments, and the file goes back in the drawer. A file cannot be flown, and it earns nothing.

The other road looks worse. Find a printer, buy stock, pack parcels, answer the customer whose flag arrived the day after the match. That is a second job, and most designers turn it down. They are right to.

Who Vexonaut is

The portfolio page opens in Vexonaut's own words: «Vexonaut is the name I sign the flags I design with. Vexillology, the study of flags, has always been my passion: every flag tells who chose it, where and why.»

Vexonaut is an enthusiast, not a company. Over time Vexonaut has redrawn the flags of institutions, associations and sports federations, flags «often hard to find in a clean version that is faithful to the original».

The reason for publishing them is just as plain: «to make them known and available to everyone».

Today the page lists 59 flags: 33 institutional and 26 sport. On the sport side you find the linesman's flag, the chessboard flag, plain colours and stripes; on the other side, the flags of associations and public bodies.

Each one is a product of the shop. Whoever opens it picks the size, the fabric and the finish. Then they type their postcode and see the delivery date before paying.

Vexonaut shares one link. Whoever opens it finds the whole catalogue, all three pages of it.

What Vexonaut does not do

Here is the list of jobs that stay with us, every day:

  • printing and sewing;
  • checks;
  • shipping across the European Union;
  • invoices and returns;
  • customer service.

Vexonaut buys nothing, ships nothing and answers no angry emails. No stock waits in a garage either: every flag is sewn after the order, in the size that customer chose.

What comes back, every time a flag sells

The share is not paid once. It is paid every time that flag sells: 15% when an ordinary customer buys, 8% when a reseller buys or when we also pay the affiliate who brought the customer.

A flag lives outdoors, and flags that live outdoors get replaced. A design people like keeps working three years from now.

Here is an example, not a real sales figure. Say your share on a flag comes to 4 €, and 25 of your flags sell in a year. That is 100 €. The year after, the same buyers replace the same flags, and the count starts again.

The share matures when the order's return window closes, so only final sales count. From 100 € matured you request the payout, at most once a month, and we keep nothing. It goes through Stripe, to the bank account you connect once.

The buyer pays nothing extra for any of this. The flag costs what the others cost: your share comes out of our margin.

The rights: what you may upload

A redrawn flag still belongs to somebody, so the rights come before the upload. We accept two kinds:

  • An open licence: public domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA. Under CC BY, the original author's name appears on the flag's page. Non-commercial («NC») licences are not accepted.
  • The holder's letter: written by whoever holds the rights, naming the design and allowing us to print and sell it. We read it before publishing.

A public-domain design pays you like your own, because finding it, checking it and uploading it is work. Each design enters the catalogue only once. Whoever gets there first, gets there.

Your five steps

  1. You apply. In My account → Flag Studio: your country, a link to your work or up to three designs, two lines about you. Free.
  2. We answer. By email and in the same section. If it is a no, we tell you why.
  3. You activate your plan. Flag Studio Base costs 5 € + VAT a month. From that day you have your own page in the shop.
  4. You upload your designs. Title, description, the print file and where the rights come from. We check the file, the rights, and that the design is not in the catalogue already.
  5. It goes on sale. It becomes a flag of the shop, under your name, translated into six languages.

You pay nothing until we accept you. You can take a design down whenever you want, and the sales already made stay yours.

The moment to start

Flags sell before moments: the first match of the season, the regatta, the anniversary, the national day. A design that goes on sale after its moment waits a whole year for the next one.

So count back from the date your flags belong to. If they fly in spring, the day to apply is this winter, while the season is still far.

Take the folder out of the drawer: apply to Flag Studio.

In a drawer, your design earns nothing.
