Description

Municipality of Naples Flag

Yellow and red: the colours of Naples

This Naples flag carries no coat of arms and no lettering: just two large vertical fields, golden yellow at the pole and red at the fly. These are the city's colours, the yellow and red of Naples in their purest form, to hang from a balcony or carry into the square.

The colours of the City

Gold and red are at the heart of every Neapolitan civic symbol. The Comune's Statute says it clearly: the coat of arms is a shield «troncato d'oro e di rosso», that is, divided in half, gold above and red below, and the gonfalone too is divided gold and red. Even the sash of the presidents of the Municipalità carries the colours of the City of Naples. This flag takes those two colours and sets them side by side.

Where they come from

Many theories have been offered about the origin of the yellow and red. Some thought of the cloths with which Naples is said to have welcomed Emperor Constantine and his mother Helena, some of the sun and moon revered by the ancient inhabitants, some of the victories of the independent Duchy. The historian Bartolommeo Capasso dismissed them all: conjectures without foundation. It remains a mystery, and perhaps that is right for colours so old.

A changing history, two colours that stay

The symbols of Naples have lived through turbulent centuries. During Masaniello's revolt in 1647, a letter P, the sign of the people, appeared at the centre of the shield. From 1866 the ducal crown gave way to the turreted crown, symbol of municipal freedom. Under fascism the coat of arms was altered, and after the war it returned to its own form. Through all these changes, the yellow and the red never moved.

The Four Days and Saint Januarius

The gonfalone of Naples carries the gold medal for military valour, awarded on 10 September 1944 for the popular uprising against the German troops, the Four Days of late September 1943. And every year, on 19 September, the city gathers around San Gennaro, patron of Naples, on the day of his solemnity. These are the days when the yellow and red of Naples are seen the most.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is Neapolitan or has Naples in their blood, for the many Neapolitan families who emigrated across Italy and the world, for the Comune, the Municipalità and their offices, for schools, for those celebrating San Gennaro, for fans of Napoli, for a pizzeria, a pastry shop or a shop of Campanian products, for the tourist who wants to take home a piece of the city. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
