Description

Most Serene Republic of Venice version of War Flag

The lion with the sword: the war flag of Venice

The flag of the Serenissima in its war version is a red and gold cloth: in the centre the winged lion of Saint Mark, in gold, standing on a rock and gripping a drawn sword. A golden scrolled border runs around it, and on the fly the flag divides into six tails, in the manner of a gonfalon. It is the armed sister of the better-known flag with the open book.

The Evangelist's lion

The winged lion is the symbol of Saint Mark the Evangelist. On 31 January 828 his relics reached Venice from Alexandria in Egypt and were received by Doge Giustiniano Particiaco. From then on Saint Mark was the city's patron, and his winged lion became the symbol of the city, on its flags too.

Peace and war

The tradition recalled by Saint Mark's Basilica is simple: in time of peace the lion holds the book open at the words «Pax tibi Marce evangelista meus», in time of war it menacingly grips a sword. Vexillologists add a nuance: a naval dictionary printed in Venice in 1759 wrote that on naval flags the lion shows either the cross or the sword, but only the cross on merchant flags. The sword was therefore also the sign of the armed fleet.

A Republic with no flag law

The Serenissima never fixed the design of its flags by law, which is why many variants exist. Towards the end of the fourteenth century the field became red and the lion gold, and in 1848 an English book of maritime flags, Norie and Hobbs, drew the Venetian war flag with the lion holding a sword. The Republic, born in the seventh century, ceased to exist in 1797, when Napoleon ceded it to Austria with the Treaty of Campo Formio.

The armed lion today

Today the flag with the sword is seen far less than the one with the open book: vexillologists find it on sale, but rarely photographed in use. That is exactly why it is sought by collectors of the Serenissima's flags who want both, peace and war, and by those who tell the story of the galleys and the Arsenal.

Who chooses it

For anyone from the Veneto or with roots in the lands of the Serenissima, for collectors and history enthusiasts, for historical re-enactment groups and costume regattas, for museums, schools and theatre or film sets, for a Venetian bacaro or themed venue, and for anyone who wants the complete pair together with the peace flag. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
