Czech Republic Flag

White, red and a blue wedge: the Czech flag

The Czech flag is made of two horizontal bands, white above and red below, and a blue wedge that starts at the pole and reaches exactly halfway across. A simple, unmistakable design with more than a hundred years of history.

The colours of the lion of Bohemia

White and red come from the arms of Bohemia: a silver lion on a red shield. The white above recalls the lion, the red below the field of the shield. That is where it all begins.

The wedge of 1920

When Czechoslovakia was born, white and red alone were not enough: the flag had to stand apart from other flags with horizontal bands. So a blue wedge was added: blue is the third Slavic colour, also found in the arms of Moravia and Slovakia. On 30 March 1920 Parliament approved the new flag, and it has been in use ever since, with the single exception of the years of German occupation during the Second World War.

A flag the Czech Republic chose to keep

In 1992, as Czechs and Slovaks prepared to separate, a clause was written into the law ending the federation that forbade both new states from using the symbols of Czechoslovakia. The Czech Republic, however, kept the flag. So the tricolour with the blue wedge, born for one country, became the flag of another without changing a single detail.

Its proportions

The flag of the Czech Republic has a proportion of 2 to 3, and the point of the wedge reaches precisely to the centre.
