Description

Municipality of Novara Flag

A white cross on red: the Novara flag

The flag of Novara is a red cloth crossed by a white cross running from edge to edge. A clean, strong design that puts the city's shield onto the fabric: red with a silver cross, the heraldic colour that is rendered in white.

The city's shield

The Statute of the Comune di Novara describes the coat of arms in a few words: «red shield, silver cross, adorned with the ornaments of a City», recognised by Royal Decree of 24 October 1928. The same coat of arms is reproduced on the city's gonfalone. The flag leaves aside crown and ornaments and keeps only the red and the cross.

An old city between Milan and Vercelli

Novara was born as Novaria, made a municipium by Caesar, and grew along the road linking Milan to Vercelli. In the second half of the 4th century it became a bishop's seat, and in the early 11th century the Comune took hold there. In 1167 Novara joined the Lombard League, the alliance of the northern cities against Emperor Frederick Barbarossa: the years when cities learned to recognise themselves in their own insignia.

Saint Gaudentius and the winter flowers

The first bishop of Novara was Gaudentius, chosen by Saint Ambrose, bishop of the city from 398 until his death in 418. His basilica, rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries, is still the heart of the city today. It is said that when Ambrose came to visit him in the depths of winter, flowers and fruit miraculously blossomed in Gaudentius's garden to honour the guest.

22 January, the city's festival

On 22 January Novara celebrates its patron. The authorities, the associations and the band gather in Piazza Matteotti and walk in a civic procession to the Basilica of San Gaudenzio, where the Flower Ceremony and the solemn Mass take place. It is the right day for the white cross on red.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Novara or with roots in the city and its province, for emigrated families who want a piece of home, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for those who take part in the feast of San Gaudenzio, for fans of Novara, for a restaurant, a pastry shop or a shop of products from the Novara area, for the tourist who wants a memory of the city. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
