Description

City of Como Flag

White cross on red: the flag of Como

The flag of Como is red, crossed by a full white cross that runs to the edges. It is the city's coat of arms carried onto the cloth: simple, clean, ancient. Anyone who sees it on the lake, on a balcony or in a square knows at once where it comes from.

The city's coat of arms

The Comune's Statute describes it in a few words: «di rosso alla croce d'argento», red with a silver cross, with the motto «LIBERTAS» written in black, diagonally, in the lower quarter, and the city's ornaments with the crown. On the flag, the silver of the cross becomes white. The Comune keeps its use strict: the coat of arms may not be reproduced for political or commercial purposes without the Mayor's authorisation.

«Rubra signa cum cruce alba»

The oldest written evidence of Como's colours is found in the poem of the ten-year war between Milan and Como, from 1118 to 1127, written by an anonymous Como author of that time. There Como's banner is called «rubra signa», and according to the text's editor «cum cruce alba» is understood: red ensigns, with the white cross. The red of the field and the white of the cross come from the city's Ghibelline allegiance, while Guelph cities, such as Milan, carried the same colours the other way round.

The motto Libertas

In the seventeenth century the Como historian Francesco Ballarini wrote that the people of Como already put the motto «Libertas» on their communal standard. The motto disappeared when Como was subject to the Visconti, returned when the city governed itself as a republic, vanished again under Spanish rule and reappeared with the freedom regained in 1859.

The flag of the women of Como

On 27 May 1859, with Garibaldi's victory at San Fermo, Como became free and Italian again. Soon after, the women of Como wove and gave the Comune a flag bearing the coat of arms and the motto «Libertas», which is still kept in the Town Hall today. A flag born with freedom, which the city still treasures.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Como or has roots on Lake Como, for families who emigrated and Como associations around the world, for the Comune, the city's schools and associations, for rowing and sailing clubs and festivals on the lake, for fans of Como, for a restaurant, a hotel or a shop selling products of the lake, for anyone who has visited Como and wants to take a memory home.
