Description

Vienna Flag

Red over white, with the shield of Vienna: the flag of Wien

This flag is split into two equal horizontal stripes: red above, white below. In the centre sits Vienna's coat of arms on a shield: a white cross on red, outlined in black.

What the Vienna law says

The law on the symbols of the federal capital Vienna says that the arms show a white cross on a red shield and that the colours of Vienna are red and white. It describes the flag as two equal horizontal stripes, red above and white below, in the proportion two to three, and anyone may use this plain flag, within the limits of §5. A comment on Flags of the World adds that a service flag with a shield is used in practice although the law does not provide for it. Our flag is that version with the shield.

The cross and the Bindenschild

German Wikipedia says the cross appeared in Vienna at the end of the 13th century, although not on the seal. A coin of 1278 shows four crossed Bindenschilder. The city used seals with the red-white-red Bindenschild from 1360 into the 17th century. In February 1925, after a long debate, a new coat of arms was introduced, the Bindenschild with a silver cross on a red ground. The present law was issued on 12 February 1998.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Vienna or with roots there, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for cafés, Heurigen, clubs, schools and businesses, and for lovers of the Austrian capital. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
