Description

Viceroy of Italian East Africa Flag

Blue border, white panel, Savoy shield: the flag of the Viceroy of Italian East Africa

This flag has a blue border around a white rectangular panel. In the centre of the panel stands a red shield with a white cross, with a blue edge, under a royal crown with red cap. At each of the four corners of the blue border there is a golden fasces, a bundle of rods with an axe.

The flag of the Viceroy

Wikimedia Commons describes this design as the distinctive flag of the Viceroy and Governor-General of Italian East Africa, 1938-1941, with reference to the Gazzetta Ufficiale of 20 April 1938 and to the Almanacco Navale 1943 as the source of the drawing. The blue of the border is the «blue Savoy».

Italian East Africa

Italian East Africa was a colonial entity of the Kingdom of Italy in the Horn of Africa that existed from 1936 to 1941. It was proclaimed on 1 June 1936, after the conquest of Ethiopia, and joined Ethiopia with the old Italian possessions of Eritrea and Somalia.

Viceroys

The colonial government was headed by a Viceroy of Ethiopia and Governor-General of Italian East Africa, with Addis Ababa as capital. Among the representatives listed by English Wikipedia are Pietro Badoglio, Rodolfo Graziani and Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of Aosta.
