Valais Flag

White, red and thirteen stars: the Valais flag

The flag of the Canton of Valais is divided vertically into two halves: white on the pole side, red on the other. On it are thirteen five-pointed stars in three rows: four red on the white, four white on the red and five straddling the middle line, half red and half white. It is the Valais flag, the flag of the Rhône valley.

The colours of the Bishop of Sion

White and red are the colours of the Bishop of Sion, for centuries the dominant power in the valley. It is a land of ancient faith: around 380 Theodulus, the first bishop of Valais, brought to Acaunum, today's Saint-Maurice, the cult of Saint Maurice and his companions of the Theban Legion, and in 515 the abbey that bears his name was founded there.

One star for each dizain

The stars tell the political history of the valley. Valais was made up of highly autonomous communities, the dizains, in German «Zehnden». From 1613 to 1798 it was the Republic of the Seven Dizains, and on its arms there were seven stars. A law of 4 September 1802 fixed the colours of the new republic, white and red, and the stars rose to twelve.

1815: the thirteenth star and joining Switzerland

After Napoleon, who in 1810 had turned Valais into the French department of Simplon, the valley asked to join the Confederation. With the act of union of 4 August 1815 Valais became the twentieth Swiss canton, and the allied powers imposed a division into thirteen dizains. The Constitution of 12 May 1815 thus brought the stars to thirteen, as many as there are today.

A flag in two languages

Valais speaks French and German, Valais and Wallis, and its capital is Sion. The thirteen stars fly in the same way over both parts of the valley, and on the 1st of August, the Swiss national day, they accompany the white cross when streets, squares and balconies fill with flags and lanterns.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Valais and for those who moved away, for Valais families in Italy and around the world and Swiss associations abroad, for a commune or a school, for the balcony on the 1st of August, for fans of Valais teams, for a winery or a breeder of Hérens cattle, for a hotel, a restaurant or a high mountain hut, for skiers and hikers in the Valais Alps. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
