Sealand Flag

Red, white and black on the diagonal: the flag of Sealand

The flag of Sealand is divided by a diagonal white band, rising from the lower corner near the hoist towards the opposite corner: above it a red triangle, below it a black one. It is the flag of the Principality of Sealand, perhaps the most famous micronation in the world, born on a concrete and steel platform in the North Sea.

A fort in the middle of the sea

Sealand is a former Second World War fortress, HM Fort Roughs, built by the British about seven miles off England's east coast: two concrete towers joined by an iron platform. After the war it was abandoned. In the 1960s Paddy Roy Bates, who had already broadcast music from a pirate radio station on another fort, moved there.

The principality of 2 September 1967

On 2 September 1967 Roy Bates proclaimed the fort the Principality of Sealand, with himself as prince and his wife Joan as princess. He gave his state a constitution, passports, stamps, coins, an anthem and a Latin motto: «E Mare Libertas», from the sea, freedom. Sealand has not been recognised by any government; in 1968, however, in a trial that followed an incident, the court ruled that the fort lay outside the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom.

Red for Roy, black for the radio

The flag was designed by Roy and Joan in the summer of 1967, with a little input from their children Michael, then fourteen, and Penny, sixteen, and was raised for the first time on 2 September 1967 itself. Prince Michael told it like this: red for Roy, black for his pirate radio days with Radio Essex, and the white line for «the path of virtue and purity», adding that the last part was a little tongue in cheek.

A flag all the way to Everest

The flag of Sealand has never flown at the United Nations or at the Olympic Games, but in 2013 the mountaineer Kenton Cool carried it to the summit of Everest. It has become a small legend among lovers of flags and of unusual stories: the flag of a principality on a platform in the sea.

Who chooses it

For a collector of micronation flags, for lovers of curious stories and of the pirate radio of the Sixties, for enthusiasts of military history and the forts of the North Sea, for a themed party, a role-playing game or a model UN, for anyone who wants to give a flag that always sparks a question. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
