Schaffhausen Flag

A black ram on yellow: the Schaffhausen flag

The flag of the Canton of Schaffhausen is among the most recognisable in Switzerland: on a yellow field strides a black ram, with a gold crown on its head, gold horns and hooves and a red tongue. The people of Schaffhausen simply call it the «Bock», their ram, and it is the emblem of a canton on the right bank of the Rhine that borders Germany for over 150 kilometres and the rest of Switzerland for just over 30.

The Bock that faces the pole

The Canton has precise rules for its emblem. The Schaffhausen State Archives describe it this way: the Bock striding freely on a yellow background. And they add a detail that matters: looking at the flag, the ram faces left, towards the pole it is attached to. Curiously, the canton's colours are not the yellow and black of the arms: Schaffhausen's «Standesfarben» are green and black.

The gold crown of 1512

At first the ram was simply black. In 1512 Schaffhausen was among the confederates who received from Pope Julius II the precious silk banners given after the Italian campaign, and it was then that the Bock received a gold crown, with gilded horns and hooves. In 1713 a standard of the Schaffhausen dragoons already showed the crowned ram and, in gold letters, Schaffhausen's motto: «Deus spes nostra est», God is our hope.

From a Rhine town to the canton of 1501

Schaffhausen's story begins around the Benedictine abbey of Allerheiligen and the great river. For centuries the town lived off the Rhine and long controlled the transport of goods on the river, above and below the falls. After Habsburg rule, from 1330 to 1415, Schaffhausen was free again, and in 1501 it joined the Confederation as a canton. In 1529 it embraced the Reformation.

A flag for feast days and for the river

On the 1st of August, the Swiss national day, streets, squares and balconies fill with flags and lanterns, and the Bock tells everyone where you come from. It is the flag of a whole landscape: the banks of the Rhine, the villages of the Klettgau, the wine region, Stein am Rhein and the Rhine Falls.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Schaffhausen and for those who moved away, for Schaffhausen families in Italy and around the world and Swiss associations abroad, for a commune or a school, for the balcony on the 1st of August, for fans of Schaffhausen's teams, for a Klettgau winery, a restaurant or a hotel on the Rhine, for hikers along the river. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
