Description

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Flag

White with the crowned oval arms: the flag of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

This flag is entirely white. In the centre stands the city's oval shield under a royal crown: a blue field with waves, anchors and castles, a golden oval carrying a green cross over a red sword, three black lion heads, and a wreath of green leaves with black and white ribbons and a medal hanging below.

Granted in 1803

According to Spanish Wikipedia, the municipal flag was granted by a royal warrant (Real Cédula) of 28 August 1803, issued by Charles IV, and is entirely white with the coat of arms in the centre. English Wikipedia adds that the white reflects the Bourbon dynasty and fidelity to the royal house of Spain.

The cross, the sword and the lions

The shield is oval rather than the usual shape. The green cross is the foundation cross that gave the city its name, the red sword is the cross of Saint James, and the three lion heads recall the victories over the attacks of Blake, Jennings and Nelson. The laurel and olive wreath stands for victory. The red cross commemorates the victory over Nelson in 1797, on Saint James's Day.

A city founded around a cross

The infobox gives 3 May 1494 as the founding date, as «Real de la Santa Cruz»: Castilian troops under Alonso Fernández de Lugo landed and set up a camp, and Lugo placed a large wooden cross there. Santa Cruz is the capital of the island of Tenerife and, together with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, shares the status of capital of the Canary Islands, an arrangement in place since a decree of 1927.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Santa Cruz or Tenerife, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the city's offices and ceremonies, for carnival groups, schools, clubs and associations, for a shop, a hotel or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
