Sangallo Flag

The green and white fasces: the flag of the Canton of St. Gallen

The flag of the Canton of St. Gallen is green, with in the centre a white bundle of rods bound crosswise by a green ribbon, from which rises the white blade of an axe turned towards the pole. An ancient symbol, taken from republican Rome, for a canton born in 1803.

A new canton, a new symbol

Before 1803 today's canton did not exist. On its territory there had been several states: the prince-abbey of St. Gallen with the Toggenburg, the free city of St. Gallen, the bailiwicks of the Rheintal, Werdenberg, Sargans and Gaster, the town of Rapperswil. The new canton, founded under French influence, had no coat of arms, and could not take that of any of its parts. So, on behalf of the first Landammann Karl Müller-Friedberg, the district governor David Gonzenbach proposed the bundle of rods.

Unity, sovereignty, justice

In ancient Rome the fasces were carried before the magistrates, a sign of their authority. Gonzenbach chose them as a symbol of unity, sovereignty and state power, and the axe inside the bundle, following the Roman model, is the axe of justice. The bundle was drawn in perspective and had eight rods: the eight districts into which the canton was divided in 1803. In today's flat drawing five can be seen. The ribbons meant cohesion, the axe common strength.

The green of freedom

As early as March 1803 the government proposed green and white as the colours of the canton. Green was then the colour of revolution and freedom; white, the colour of innocence: the new state wanted to leave behind the injustices of past times. The 1981 ordinance on the coat of arms says it in a few words: the colours of the canton are green and silver, and the bundle is a symbol of concord and sovereignty.

The name of a monk

The canton, the city, the abbey and the diocese take their name from the missionary monk Gallus, Irish or Irish-Frankish. St. Gallen has been a canton of the Confederation since 1803. Since 2003, just in time for the canton's two hundredth anniversary, its territory has been divided into eight electoral districts: eight again, like the rods of the bundle of 1803. And on the 1st of August the St. Gallen green flies next to the Swiss cross.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from St. Gallen or has roots in the canton, for those who come from the Toggenburg, the Rheintal or the Sarganserland, for the Italian families who live and work in St. Gallen, for a commune, a school or a club, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August, for fans of St. Gallen teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a mountain hut or a shop selling local products, for the tourists and hikers visiting the canton. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
