Description

Republic of Macedonia Flag

The golden sun on a red field: the flag of North Macedonia

The flag of North Macedonia is a red field with a golden sun in the centre, from which eight rays spread out, widening all the way to the edges. Many in Italy still call it the Macedonian flag, because until 2019 the country was called the Republic of Macedonia. It is one of the brightest flags in Europe: one glance is enough to recognise it.

Red and gold, the colours of a land

Red and gold have been part of the Macedonian heritage for centuries: one of the region's early coats of arms was a golden lion on a red shield. Alongside them, red and black were the traditional colours of Slavic Macedonia, carried high during the 1903 uprising for independence.

From independence to 1995

In the Yugoslav years, the republic of Macedonia had a red flag with a yellow-bordered red star in the corner. With independence in 1991 that flag flew for a few more months, until in 1992 it was replaced by a red flag with a different golden sun, the so-called Vergina sun, the symbol of the dynasty of Philip II and Alexander the Great. That symbol, found in 1977 in northern Greece, was considered by the Greeks part of their own heritage, and with an agreement between the two countries in September 1995 the flag was changed.

The sun of 1995

Today's flag was adopted by the law of 5 October 1995. It was designed by Miroslav Grčev: a golden sun with eight rays that thicken towards the edges, similar to the previous design but new. The golden sun is also mentioned in the national anthem and appears in the country's coat of arms.

A new name, the same flag

On 12 February 2019 the Prespa Agreement, signed with Greece on 17 June 2018, entered into force, and the country took the name Republic of North Macedonia. The flag did not change: the golden sun on a red field remained the face of the country, under the new name as under the old one.

Who chooses it

For people from North Macedonia living in Italy or elsewhere in Europe, for the associations of the Macedonian community, for families with roots in Skopje, in Ohrid or in a village of the Vardar valley, for fans of the national football team, for a school or a multicultural celebration, for a restaurant or shop, for a traveller in love with the Balkans, for a collector or for a Model United Nations. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
