Description

Psara Flag

White and red, with a cross and an anchor: the flag of Psara

This flag is white with a broad red border. In the centre stands a large red cross on a red crescent with a small red star beneath it. On its left is a red anchor wound by a green snake, with a yellow bird at the snake's head, and on its right a thin red spear. The motto ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ Η ΘΑΝΑΤΟΣ, «Freedom or Death», runs along the foot.

What the symbols mean

Flags of the World, quoting the book Hellenic Flags, describes the flag used on Psara during the Greek War of Independence as white with a red border, a red cross over a big crescent and a small star, a red anchor fouled with a green snake whose tongue is bitten by a yellow owl, and a red spear. As explained in the Naval Museum of Chania, the cross stands for Christendom, the crescent for Islam, the snake for wisdom, the anchor for stability, the spear for power and the bird for the help from God.

The island

The municipality of Psara, near the island of Chios, is made of the island of the same name and the uninhabited islet of Antipsara, and had 458 inhabitants in 2011. Psara joined the Greek War of Independence on 18 April 1821, and on 8 September 1822 the joint fleets of Hydra, Psara and Spetses defeated the Ottoman Navy near Spetses.

1824

The Ottoman navy invaded the island on 21 June 1824, and on 4 July the resistance of the Psariots ended with a last stand at the town's old fort of Palaiokastro. Flags of the World says the refugees there first threw a white flag with the words Ἐλευθερία ἤ Θάνατος, «Freedom or Death». The municipality today uses different flags derived from the historical flag, with variations in the colours and in the position of the words.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Psara, Chios or the North Aegean, for the descendants of the Psariots, for those who live far away and carry their island with them, for the Municipality, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for historians and collectors of flags of the Greek War of Independence. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
