Description

Province of Limburg Flag

White, blue and gold, with a red lion: the flag of Limburg

This flag has three horizontal bands: white at the top, a narrower blue band in the middle and gold-yellow at the bottom. On the pole side stands a large red lion with a crown, rising across all three bands.

What the description says

The Wikipedia article on the flag gives two bands of equal height, silver (white) above and gold below, separated by a narrower blue band, with a crowned red lion with a double tail on the hoist side. The white and yellow bands each take two fifths of the height, the blue one fifth, and the proportions are 2:3. The Provincial Executive (Gedeputeerde Staten) of Limburg fixed the flag on 28 July 1953.

Colours from the arms

The colours come from the provincial coat of arms, granted by Royal Decree of 27 December 1886. According to the article, red comes from the arms of Valkenburg, Horne and Limburg, blue from the arms of Gelderland, and gold from the arms of Horne, Gelre and Gulik. The lion stands for Limburg and recalls the old Duchy of Limburg. The flag is based on a design by Louis Maris, an architect from Maastricht; in his own design the lower band was white, not yellow.

Before 1953

In the Duchy of Limburg (1839 to 1866) a red and white flag was in use. The province asked to adopt it formally in 1885, but the national government said it was forbidden; it was still used informally until the Second World War.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Limburg, Maastricht, Venlo, Roermond or Heerlen, or with roots in the Dutch south; for those who live far away and carry their province with them; for carnival societies, clubs, associations and local businesses; for fans of Limburg and its hills. Not to be confused with the Belgian province of the same name. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
