Description

Province of Groningen Flag

Red, blue, white and green: the flag of the province of Groningen

This flag is divided into four fields by a broad white cross, with a narrower green cross laid over it. The field next to the pole at the top and the field at the bottom of the fly side are red; the other two fields are blue.

What the decree says

The flag was fixed on 17 February 1950 by Gedeputeerde Staten of the province and published in the Provinciaal Blad of 23 February 1950. The four fields are equal in size. The four arms of the white cross are each one third of the height of the flag wide; the arms of the green cross are one ninth of the height. The colours are defined as Pantone 032U (red), 300U (blue) and 355U (green).

The province and its city

The flag is based on the flag and arms of the Ommelanden, the land around the city, and on the flag of the city of Groningen. The city's colours, white and green, form the central cross, which stands for the city's central location and role. The red, white and blue come from the Ommelanden, and the three blue bands of the Ommelanden flag are said to represent the historical districts of Hunsingo, Fivelingo and Westerkwartier.

A cross with a northern look

The cross is a variant of the Scandinavian cross, a reference to the trade ties with Scandinavia. The design is by Jan Tuin, then a member of Gedeputeerde Staten and later mayor of Groningen: when the provincial officials could not agree on a design, he offered to make one, and it was well received.

Who chooses it

For anyone from the province of Groningen, from Veendam, Hoogezand or Delfzijl, or with roots in the Ommelanden; for those who live far away and carry the province with them; for schools, clubs, associations and local businesses; for fans of the north of the Netherlands. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
