Occitania Flag

The golden cross and the star: the flag of Occitania

The flag of Occitania is a red field with, in the centre, a large golden cross with flared arms, each ending in three small balls, and in the upper corner, away from the pole, a golden seven-pointed star. It is the flag of the land of the langue d'oc, and today it is a flag in full use.

The land of the langue d'oc

Occitania is the whole of the lands where the langue d'oc was spoken, and in part still is: much of southern France, the Aran Valley in Spain and, in Italy, the Occitan valleys of Piedmont and Liguria and the village of Guardia Piemontese, in Calabria. The name Languedoc means exactly «language of oc», because «oc» was the old word for «yes».

The cross of Toulouse

The golden cross on red is the cross of Toulouse, the arms of the Counts of Toulouse and of the historic province of Languedoc, considered by a twentieth-century French heraldist one of the most ancient coats of arms of France. A fourteenth-century Castilian book of travels already describes for the lord of Toulouse a red banner with a golden cross. Still today it is also the flag of the city of Toulouse.

The star of the Félibrige

On 21 May 1854, in a castle near Avignon, seven young Provençal poets, among them Frédéric Mistral, founded the Félibrige, the movement that revived the language and literature of oc. Its symbol is the seven-pointed star: the best-known explanation links it to the seven founders and to Saint Estelle's day, on which 21 May fell.

From Languedoc to all of Occitania

The oldest Occitan flag is simply the cross of Toulouse on red. In the twentieth century the Occitanist movement added the star of the Félibrige, to say that Occitania was not only Languedoc but also Provence, Gascony, Limousin, Auvergne and the other lands of oc. Today this version with the star is the one most used to represent Occitania.

Who chooses it

For anyone who lives in the Occitan valleys of Piedmont and Liguria or has roots in southern France, for cultural associations and Occitan music and dance groups, for the feasts and festivals of the valleys, for a school or a library, for lovers of troubadour poetry, for a mountain hut, an inn or a mountain shop, for collectors. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
