Description

North Holland Flag

Yellow, red and blue: the flag of North Holland

This flag is a horizontal tricolour: yellow at the top, red in the middle and blue at the bottom, in three bands of equal height.

What the decree says

According to the Dutch Wikipedia article the decree describes the flag as yellow (above), red (middle) and blue below, each band a third of the height, with proportions of 2:3. The Provincial Executive (Gedeputeerde Staten) adopted it officially on 22 October 1958, with the approval of the High Council of Nobility (Hoge Raad van Adel).

Colours from the arms

The colours come from the provincial coat of arms, which combines the old arms of Holland and of West Friesland. Yellow (gold) and red are the Holland colours; yellow and blue are the West Frisian colours. Because yellow appears in both, it was placed at the top.

Before 1958

The adoption was published in the Provincial Gazette of North Holland in 1958; the tricolour had already been in unofficial use for several years. For Queen Wilhelmina's 40th jubilee in 1938 the province used a red, yellow and blue tricolour; that order was dropped because it looked too much like the red, white and blue of the national flag.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Haarlem, Alkmaar, Hoorn, Zaandam or the Kennemerland coast, or with roots in North Holland; for those who live far away and carry their province with them; for clubs, associations and local businesses. Amsterdam has its own flag. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
