Neuchatel Flag

Green, white and red with the cross: the flag of Neuchâtel

The flag of the Canton of Neuchâtel has three vertical stripes, green, white and red, and at the top of the red stripe a small white cross. To anyone coming from Italy it immediately recalls the Italian tricolour; but the small white cross makes it Swiss, and tells of a revolution that is still celebrated here every year.

The flag of a republic

Green, white and red are the colours of the revolution of 1848. Until then Neuchâtel was a principality: from 1707 it belonged to the kings of Prussia, while being, from 1814, also the twenty-first canton of the Confederation. On 29 February 1848 the republicans took power in Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds; on the 1st of March their militias came down to Neuchâtel and took the castle, without bloodshed. With a decree of 11 April 1848 the new republic gave itself its colours.

A Swiss cross in the corner

The small white cross on red has the shape of the Swiss cross. The King of Prussia gave up his claims to Neuchâtel only with the Treaty of Paris of 2 May 1857. Since 1848 the canton has officially been called the Republic and Canton of Neuchâtel, and its flag is still the one born with the revolution.

The coat of arms in the Constitution

The Constitution of 24 September 2000 describes the coat of arms in article 3: tierced per pale vert, argent and gules, the gules charged in chief with a small cross argent. It is the same design as the flag. Before 1848 Neuchâtel used the old emblem of the counts, with silver chevrons on a red pale; in the twentieth century there were several attempts to bring it back, the last one rejected by popular vote in 1954, but green, white and red remained.

The 1st of March

The 1st of March is a holiday in Neuchâtel: the canton celebrates the Instauration de la République, a cantonal public holiday. Since 1985 many retrace on foot the route of the revolutionaries of 1848, setting off from Le Locle and Môtiers to reach, after more than thirty kilometres, the castle of Neuchâtel. And on the 1st of August the Neuchâtel tricolour flies next to the Swiss cross.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Neuchâtel or has roots in the canton, for those who come from the Montagnes and the watchmaking towns, for the Italian families who worked and lived there, for a commune, a school or a club, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of March and the 1st of August, for fans of Neuchâtel teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a wine cellar or a shop selling local products, for tourists and hikers visiting the canton. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
