Description

Municipality of Trieste Flag

Red with the halberd: the Trieste flag

The Trieste flag is red, with the white halberd in the centre, the three-pronged spearhead that everyone in the city recognises. It reproduces the city's coat of arms, red with a silver halberd, turned into a cloth to fly. For the people of Trieste it is simply «the halberd», and one look is enough to know which city it stands for.

The lance of Saint Sergius

In the communal statutes of 1350 the symbol of Trieste has a precise name: the lance of Saint Sergius. Over time, in everyday speech, it became the halberd, although weapons experts would rather call it a corsesca. Perhaps it originally represented a cross or a lily; what is certain is that since the fourteenth century it has been the sign of the Comune, and since then it has distinguished Trieste.

In the city's Statute

The Statute of the Comune of Trieste describes the coat of arms as the one historically in use: a silver halberd on a red field. The gonfalone, recognised by royal decree of 30 June 1932, bears the gold medal for military valour. Coat of arms and gonfalone, the Statute says, are the symbol of the community.

Eagles, fasces and crowns

Over the centuries the halberd has changed company according to who governed the city: double-headed eagles, Napoleonic eagles, fasces, mural crowns. In 1382 Trieste passed to the Habsburgs, and in 1464 Emperor Frederick III granted it a new coat of arms. In 1719 it was declared a free port, and began to become the sea outlet of the Danubian lands; on 3 November 1918 it passed to Italy.

A civic flag

The red flag with the halberd was introduced between the two world wars and is still the civic flag of Trieste today. From 1947 to October 1954 it was also used as the flag of the Free Territory of Trieste.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Trieste or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Giulian associations around the world, for the Comune, schools and the university, for the city's festivals and events, for sailing clubs and rowing societies, for fans of Triestina, for a historic café, a buffet or a shop selling products of the Karst, for anyone who has visited the city and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
