Description

Municipality of Trent Flag

Yellow and blue: the Trento flag

The Trento flag is made of three horizontal stripes: yellow, blue and yellow, with the blue stripe in the middle. No coat of arms, no lettering: only the city's colours, as they have been seen flying for decades. Flag scholars describe it exactly like this, plain, and regard the versions with the coat of arms on the central stripe as improper.

A small mystery of colours

The yellow and blue flag has been in use in Trento since the years of the union with the Kingdom of Italy, at the end of the Great War. Where the two colours come from, however, no one has ever made clear: not even eminent scholars such as Gerola, who studied the question in 1925, managed to explain their origin. A secret the city keeps, and one that makes its flag even more its own.

The eagle of Saint Wenceslas

The Comune's coat of arms, by contrast, has a precise history. It is a black eagle with outspread wings, with two golden trefoil stems on its wings and red flames, recognised by decree of 6 May 1930. It is the eagle of Saint Wenceslas, patron of Bohemia: in 1339 King John of Bohemia granted it to the prince-bishop of Trento, Nicholas of Brno, and since then it has been the symbol of the Trentino land.

The city of the Council

Under Augustus Trento became an important military base; from the eleventh century it was the seat of a prince-bishopric. In 1407 Prince-Bishop George of Liechtenstein had to recognise the freedom of the commune, and on 13 December 1545 the Council that bears its name opened in the city. The Statute describes it this way: city of the Council, a border city between the Italian and the German world, with a tradition of self-government that has never faded.

The return to Italy

On 19 March 1848 Trento raised the tricolour and was at the heart of the Trentino revolution. Almost completely evacuated during the First World War, on 3 November 1918 it became part of Italy again. It is since those years that the yellow and blue has flown as the city's flag.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Trentino or has roots in Trento, for families who emigrated and Trentino associations around the world, for the Comune, schools and the university, for the city's festivals and events, for fans of Trento's teams, for a winery, a restaurant or a shop selling Trentino products, for anyone who has visited the city and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
