Description

Municipality of Scarlino Flag

Yellow over blue, with the star of Scarlino: the flag of Scarlino

This flag is divided horizontally: yellow on top, blue below. In the centre stands a blue shield with a large gold star, eight small stars between its points and a ninth above, all inside a gold line of nine arcs. A silver mural crown sits above, and a wreath of laurel and oak tied with a red ribbon frames the shield.

A star among stars

The Statute of the Comune of Scarlino gives the arms as a blue field with a star flanked by eight small stars set between its points and topped by a ninth star of intermediate size, all in gold inside a closed line of nine arcs, also gold. Italian Wikipedia adds that the shield is of the Samnite type.

Yellow and blue

Italian Wikipedia gives the gonfalone as «Troncato di giallo e d'azzurro», embroidered in silver, charged with the arms and the inscription «Comune di Scarlino». This flag takes the same two bands, with the arms in the centre. The statute dates the description of the arms to a decree of 23 July 1974, and Italian Wikipedia says the arms and gonfalone were granted by presidential decree in July 1974.

From Aldobrandeschi to Pisa

The first mention of Scarlino is in a document of 973 naming Lamberto Aldobrandeschi. In 1227 the Comune of Pisa bought the centre of the village; Scarlino stayed under Piombino until 1815, when it passed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Italian Wikipedia says Giuseppe Garibaldi stayed here during the Risorgimento.

The coast of Scarlino

Scarlino is a comune in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscany. Its territory runs from the slopes of Poggio Ballone to the high, jagged coast of the Bandite di Scarlino promontory, a protected area that includes the coves of Cala Violina and Cala Martina, and to the port of Il Puntone. The patron saint is St Martin of Tours, celebrated on 11 November.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Scarlino or from the Grosseto coast, for those who live far away and carry their place with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
