Description

Municipality of Portopalo di Capo Passero Flag

Red and blue, with the arms of the town: the flag of Portopalo di Capo Passero

This flag is split down the middle: red on the left, blue on the right. In the centre stands a shield divided in three: on gold, a red lighthouse on a blue base; on silver, a blue eight-pointed star; on red, three gold ears of wheat tied in blue. A silver mural crown sits above, and branches of laurel and oak tied with a tricolour ribbon frame it. There is no text.

The lighthouse, the star and the wheat

Italian Wikipedia gives the blazon of the arms: in the first part, gold, a red lighthouse of two tiers standing on a blue field; in the second, silver, a blue star of eight rays; in the third, red, three gold ears of wheat bound with blue. The arms and the gonfalone were granted by decree of the President of the Republic no. 1830 of 25 April 1988, as the Statute of the Comune also states.

A flag with the arms

Italian Wikipedia describes the flag of the comune as a rectangular cloth divided red and blue, with the arms of the comune in the centre; the gonfalone is also divided red and blue. This flag is exactly that.

A village built around a tuna fishery

Portopalo di Capo Passero is a comune of the free municipal consortium of Syracuse, in Sicily. Italian Wikipedia says the village owes its origin to Don Gaetano Deodato Moncada, who from 1778 promoted the area and in 1792 had about a hundred houses built at his own expense near the local tuna fishery. The first settlement, of about 300 people, farmers, shepherds and fishermen, was known by several names, among them Capo Pachino, Terra Nobile and later Porto Palo.

The southern tip of Sicily

The town lies at the southern extremity of Sicily, close to the main routes of the eastern Mediterranean. Italian Wikipedia says this position favoured, from the Greek and Roman age, fishing and the processing of fish, in particular bluefin tuna.

Who chooses it
