Description

Municipality of Petacciato Flag

Yellow and white, with the arms of the town: the flag of Petacciato

This flag is split down the middle: yellow on the left, white on the right. In the centre stands a shield: above, a tower on fire standing on the sea; below, an olive tree with a vine on a gold ground. A silver mural crown and branches of laurel and oak tied with a tricolour ribbon surround it, and the name «Comune di Petacciato» runs across the top in grey arched letters.

The burning tower

The Statute of the Comune of Petacciato describes the arms as a Saracen tower in flames, seen from the sea, and in the lower part a tall tree recalling the famous, dense and impenetrable «Bosco di Petacciato», which for many centuries marked the territory. Italian Wikipedia reads the burning tower as a memory of the destruction suffered in 1352 at the hands of the Hungarians led by Corrado Lupo, and the olive tree wrapped in vines as the symbol of the main crops. Arms and gonfalone were granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 18 October 1978.

Yellow and white

Italian Wikipedia gives the gonfalone as a cloth «troncato di giallo e di bianco», yellow and white. This flag takes those two colours and puts the arms in the centre.

A coast hit by earthquakes

Petacciato is a comune in the province of Campobasso, in Molise. Italian Wikipedia says the area was held in pre-Roman times by the Frentani and that the coastal town was destroyed several times by earthquakes, among them those of 1117, 1125 and 1456; in 1463 it was razed again by the Angevins, in their war against the Aragonese, whom Petacciato and its neighbour Guglionesi had stoutly defended.

The Blue Flag

On 15 May 2012 Petacciato received for the first time the «Bandiera Blu» (Blue Flag), the award given to the best European beaches for water quality, services and protection of the ecosystem, and it was awarded again until 2016, according to Italian Wikipedia.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Petacciato or from the Molise coast, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
