Description

Municipality of Palestrina Flag

Green and yellow, with the arms of the city: the flag of Palestrina

This flag is divided down the middle: green on the left, yellow on the right. In the centre stands an ornate gold shield, split green and gold, with three green laurel wreaths, two above and one below, tied with a blue ribbon, under a jewelled golden crown.

The gonfalone in green and yellow

Italian Wikipedia says the gonfalone of Palestrina is a cloth divided green and yellow, with the arms of the Comune in the centre and the words «Città di Palestrina» above. Araldica Civica gives the flag the same blazon, «Drappo partito di verde e di giallo».

Three wreaths

According to Italian Wikipedia, the arms were adopted together with the statute by council resolution no. 29 of 29 May 2001: a shield split green and gold, with three laurel wreaths, two above and one below, the lowest tied with a blue ribbon. The shield is topped by a golden crown with five gems, green, red, blue, red and green, alternating with four pearls.

What the wreaths mean

The wreaths are said to refer to the Greek origin of the city and to the habit of its inhabitants of making wreaths to wear on their heads; another hypothesis is that the three wreaths stand for the three walls that protected the city. Italian Wikipedia adds that the arms came into use after 1880 and that before them a column, the symbol of the Colonna family, was shown.

Praeneste

Palestrina stands on the ancient Praeneste, a Latin city famous for the sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia, which is dated to around the end of the 2nd century BC. In the 16th century the city gave birth to the composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, a central figure of Renaissance sacred polyphony.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Palestrina or from the Prenestini mountains and the Roman hills, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
