Municipality of Ostra Vetere Flag

Yellow, with the arms of the town: the flag of Ostra Vetere

This flag is a plain yellow cloth. In the centre stands a red shield with a gold cross on a mount of six hills, and the word «FIDES» in small gothic-style letters beneath the crossbar. A dark mural crown sits above, and branches of laurel and oak tied with a tricolour ribbon frame it. There is no text beyond the word in the shield.

The Calvary cross and FIDES

Italian Wikipedia gives the blazon of the arms, recognised by decree of 4 October 1934: on red, a Calvary cross set on a mount of six hills, with the word FIDES divided in two parts and written in Gothic capitals under the horizontal arm of the cross, all in gold.

A yellow gonfalone

The same page gives the gonfalone as a yellow cloth («drappo di giallo»). This flag takes that yellow and puts the arms in the centre.

From Montenovo to Ostra Vetere

Ostra Vetere is a comune in the province of Ancona, in the Marche. It took its present name on 19 March 1882 by royal decree; before that it was called Montenovo, a name first attested in the 12th century. Popular tradition has the town founded by refugees from the ancient Roman city of Ostra after its destruction by the Goths in 409 AD; the ruins of Ostra lie at the site called Le Muracce, in the locality of Pongelli.

The phoenix of the earlier arms

Italian Wikipedia adds that earlier arms were granted by royal decree of 31 May 1883. They were divided in two: the first half like the present arms, with the cross and the mount of six hills; the second half silver, with a phoenix in its immortality, and beneath the shield the Latin motto «Post fata resurgo».

Who chooses it

For anyone from Ostra Vetere or from the Marche hills, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
