Description

Municipality of Monteleone Sabino Flag

Red and light blue, with the arms of the town: the flag of Monteleone Sabino

This flag is split down the middle: red on the left, light blue on the right. In the centre stands a red shield with a gold rampant lion holding a small object in its forepaws, inside a gold ornamental frame topped by a small eagle. A gold mural crown sits above, and a wreath of laurel and oak tied with a red ribbon frames it. There is no text.

The lion and the mount

According to Italian Wikipedia the arms are red, with a gold lion holding between its front paws a mount of three peaks, also gold. Italian Wikipedia adds that the arms are used even though they have no formal grant decree. The Statute of the Comune says that the comune has the gonfalone and the arms «historically in use».

Red and blue

Italian Wikipedia gives the gonfalone as a cloth divided red and blue («partito di rosso e di azzurro»). This flag takes those two colours and puts the arms in the centre.

Why a lion?

Italian Wikipedia reports several theories on the name Monteleone. One sees the lion as the symbol of the ancient Roman town of Trebula Mutuesca, on whose ruins the village rose, and points to the many stone lions in the village. Another traces the name to the Brancaleoni family, who ruled from 1344. A popular one sees a lion's back in the shape of the hill; the page says this last theory has no documentary support.

On the Sabine hills

Monteleone Sabino is a comune in the province of Rieti, in Lazio, 496 metres above sea level on the southern edge of the Monti Sabini, in a territory crossed by the river Farfa. Its medieval village stretches along the ridge of a hill.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Monteleone Sabino or from the Sabina hills, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
