Description

Municipality of Marciano della Chiana Flag

Red, with the arms of the town: the flag of Marciano della Chiana

This flag is plain red. In the centre stands a green shield with a large, ornate Florentine lily. A grey mural crown sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a brown and gold ribbon, frames it. There is no text.

A lily on green

Italian Wikipedia says that the arms were recognised by decree of the Prime Minister of 24 October 1951, with the blazon «di verde, al giglio d'oro», and that the gonfalone was granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 1 December 1952 and is a plain red cloth («drappo di rosso»). Araldicacivica.it also records a flag, a red cloth with the arms of the Comune in the centre. That is this flag.

Why a Florentine lily?

The note on araldicacivica.it says that the large flower might refer, according to the historian Passerini, to the parish church of San Pietro in Agello and the rich vegetation that grew around it, but that it more probably refers to the influence of Florence on these lands. Italian Wikipedia says that, to repay the village for its loyalty to Florence, the Medici allowed the Florentine lily on the town's emblem.

The Battle of Scannagallo

On 2 August 1554 the village was at the centre of the Battle of Scannagallo, also called the Battle of Marciano, in which the Medici army, with the stronghold of Marciano as its bulwark, drove back the Sienese led by Piero Strozzi, who had invaded the Valdichiana.

The Etruscan torso and the Roman name

The area was densely populated in Etruscan times: near the village was found the famous Torso of Marciano, from a statue of a warrior dated to about the sixth century BC. The name comes from the Latin Marcianus, a large farm that belonged to a gens Marcia. The village is first named in an inventory of 1084 among the possessions of the Abbey of San Quirico alle Rose, and at less than 24 square kilometres the comune is the smallest of the Valdichiana.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Marciano della Chiana or from the Valdichiana, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a farm or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
