Description

Municipality of Leporano Flag

Yellow and blue, with the arms of the town: the flag of Leporano

This flag is divided down the middle: yellow at the pole, blue at the free end. In the centre stands a light blue shield with a rampant hare in its natural colour, turned to face right. A grey mural crown sits above the shield, and branches of laurel and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frame it from below. There is no text.

The hare

Araldicacivica.it says that the decree of 27 September 1985 describes the arms as «d'azzurro, alla lepre rivoltata, rampante in sbarra», with the ornaments of a comune. Italian Wikipedia says the arms show a rampant hare, turned back, in natural colours on a blue ground, the shield topped by a mural crown and surrounded by a branch of laurel and one of oak tied with a tricolour bow.

The gonfalone and the flag

The gonfalone is a cloth divided yellow and blue («partito di giallo e di azzurro»), measuring one metre by two and richly decorated with silver embroidery. Araldicacivica.it records a flag of the same two colours with the arms of the Comune in the centre. That is this flag.

Where does the name come from?

The origin of the name is uncertain. According to some it derives from a Roman leprarium, a hare reserve, which is why a hare is in the arms; according to others from the Latin personal name Leporius, from which a «Leporianus fundus», a farm owned by a man of that name, would come.

From Saturo to the Muscettola castle

Italian Wikipedia says that the first settlement of Leporano would go back to 736, and that the stretch of sea now called Marina di Leporano was the last crossed in 706 BC by the fleet of Phalanthus before landing in what is now the bay of Saturo and founding Taras (Taranto), the only Spartan colony of southern Italy. Long dependent on Pulsano, Leporano obtained its autonomy in 1820. The castle that still marks the village was built by the Muscettola family in the seventeenth century on an earlier Aragonese structure.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Leporano or from the Ionian coast of Salento, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a beach resort or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
