Description

Municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa Flag

Yellow and blue, with the arms of the islands: the flag of Lampedusa and Linosa

This flag is divided down the middle: yellow on the left, blue on the right. Across the top, in black capitals, are the words «COMUNE DI LAMPEDUSA E LINOSA». In the centre stands a red shield with a rampant leopard holding a round shield, a blue base and a chief with four red vertical stripes. A grey mural crown sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frames it from below.

The leopard and the four stripes

Italian Wikipedia says that the arms and the gonfalone were granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 2 September 1988. The arms are red, with a lion-leopard (a «leopardo illeonito») gripping a round shield in its front paws, resting its left hind paw on a blue plain, and a chief carrying four red pales. The gonfalone is a cloth divided yellow and blue («partito di giallo e di azzurro»). The same page says that the flag of the Comune is a rectangular cloth divided yellow and blue, and this flag adds the arms and the name.

The southernmost comune of Italy

Lampedusa e Linosa is the southernmost municipality in Italy. Its territory is the archipelago of the Pelagie Islands, which belongs geographically to Africa: the islands of Lampedusa and Linosa and the uninhabited islet of Lampione. Lampedusa is 113 kilometres from Africa and 205 from Sicily, while Linosa is of volcanic origin.

A comune born in 1875

The colonisation of the islands began in 1843 under the Bourbons. The comune was created on 31 August 1875, when royal decree 2641 of 25 July 1875 came into force and suppressed the Administration of the islands of Lampedusa and Linosa, the body that had governed the archipelago within the province of Agrigento.

A medal for welcome

On 2 July 2004 the comune received the gold medal for civil merit. Its citation says that the community, in the years 2001-2003, gave proof of the highest feelings of human solidarity and welcome towards the immigrants arriving by sea.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Lampedusa or Linosa, for those who live far away and carry their islands with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for fishermen, boat owners and diving centres, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
