Description

Municipality of Flumeri Flag

Yellow and green, with the arms of the town: the flag of Flumeri

This flag is divided down the middle: yellow on the left, green on the right. Across the top, in an arch, run the words «COMUNE DI FLUMERI» in black capitals. Below stands a red shield with three green hills on a green base, topped by a gold ear of wheat. A silver mural crown sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frames it from below.

What the statute says

The Statute of the Comune of Flumeri says that the arms conform to the seal of the town kept in the «Catasto Onciario» records, and describes them as red, with a mount of three green peaks standing on green ground, topped by a gold ear of wheat. It says that the gonfalone is a cloth divided yellow and green («partito di giallo e di verde»), carrying the arms and decorated with silver ornaments. This flag takes the two colours of the gonfalone and puts the arms in the centre.

A name from the Middle Ages

According to Italian Wikipedia, in the late Middle Ages the town was known as Fórmari or Flùmari, from which the present name derives. The origin of those names is much debated: tradition links them to the surname Forma of a Norman family, while another doubtful theory points to the Latin flumen, a river, for the rivers that mark the territory to the north and the south. The town stands on a hill covered with olive trees, at 638 metres.

Between the Appian Way and the Aragonese customs house

In the plain of the Ufita, below the town, lie the remains of a Roman settlement at the crossing of the Via Appia and the Via Aemilia, the latter leading towards the vicus of Aequum Tuticum. Nearby stands the Aragonese Dogana, the old customs house.

A town of the Irpinia

The town was badly damaged by the Irpinian earthquake of 1732. In the days of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies it was the head of a circondario, with jurisdiction over two other comuni, in the district of Ariano.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Flumeri or from the Irpinia, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
