Description

Municipality of Ferrara Flag

Black above, white below: the flag of Ferrara

The flag of Ferrara is divided into two equal horizontal bands, black at the top and white at the bottom. There are no figures or words: only the two colours of the city, the same as its coat of arms and its gonfalone. It is one of the most sober flags in Italy, and for that very reason one of the most recognisable.

The divided shield

The Comune's Statute describes the coat of arms in one line: a shield «troncato di nero e d'argento», divided horizontally in half, black above and silver below, topped by the ducal crown. On the flag the silver becomes white. The crown is ducal: the Este, lords of Ferrara, received the title of duke in 1471, with Borso.

The gonfalone with its medal

At official ceremonies and solemn occasions the Comune carries its gonfalone: a cloth divided black and white, with silver and black fringes, decorated with the silver medal for valour in the Resistance. The flag takes up the same design, black above and white below, without fringes or medal.

A Palio seven centuries old

Ferrara has a Palio that the city has felt as its own for more than seven centuries. In 1279 the municipal statutes put the horse races in writing, one on the day of Saint George, patron saint of Ferrara, and one on 15 August, the feast of the Assumption. The winner received the «pallium», a precious piece of cloth. Tradition links the first races to the battle of Cassano d'Adda in 1259, but the Palio Foundation points out that the sources do not fully confirm this reconstruction.

The contrade and their flags

Today the Palio sets eight contrade against each other: four wards inside the walls and four boroughs outside, each with its own colours. Alongside the races there are the competitions of the flag-wavers and musicians, who compete with their flags in the wind.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Ferrara or has roots between the Po and the Este walls, for families who emigrated and Emilian associations around the world, for the Comune, the city's schools and associations, for the contrade, flag-wavers and musicians of the Palio, for fans of Ferrara's teams, for a restaurant, a bakery or a shop selling Ferrara products, for anyone who has visited Ferrara and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
