Description

Municipality of Castellammare di Stabia Flag

Yellow and blue, with the arms of the city: the flag of Castellammare di Stabia

This flag is split down the middle: yellow on the left, blue on the right. In the centre are the arms: a shield, painted in the style of an old picture, with the Madonna and Child seated on clouds above a tower by the sea, with a mountain in the distance, and a ribbon at the foot with the motto «POST FATA RESURGO». A crown with towers sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a pink ribbon, frames it. There is no other lettering.

Post fata resurgo

Italian Wikipedia describes the arms as a battlemented tower built on the seashore, topped by the Madonna with the Child on her knees, seated on clouds, with the Latin motto «Post fata resurgo». The Madonna recalls the image of the Virgin in the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Pozzano. The arms were in use for a long time and were formally recognised on 22 June 1906. The motto, which can be translated «I shall rise again after death», was added by a resolution of the town council of 14 November 1864.

The flag

Italian Wikipedia says the gonfalone is a cloth divided yellow above and blue below («troncato di giallo e di azzurro»), and that the city administration has adopted a flag divided yellow and blue left and right, with the city arms in the centre. That is the design here. Wikimedia Commons lists it as the flag of the city.

From Stabiae to the shipyards

Castellammare di Stabia is a comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania. Italian Wikipedia says that the area was inhabited from the 8th century BC under the name Stabiae, conquered by Rome in 340 BC, and that the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 struck Stabiae, where the historian Pliny the Elder died. It adds that in 1783 the first Italian shipyards were opened there.
