Municipality of Ancona Flag

Red with the golden cross: the flag of Ancona

The flag of Ancona is a red field with a yellow cross in the centre, with equal arms that stop short of the edges: a Greek cross. It is a flag tied to the sea and to the East, and one look is enough to recognise it as the flag of Ancona.

The cross of the gonfalone

The Statute of the Comune di Ancona describes the gonfalone precisely: «gules a couped (that is, Greek) cross or», with the words «COMUNE DI ANCONA» and the pole topped by the golden warrior on horseback. The flag takes up the same red field and the same golden cross, without inscriptions or ornaments. The city's coat of arms, instead, shows a golden warrior with a sword on a galloping horse, and the motto ANCON DORICA CIVITAS FIDEI.

A Doric city

The motto recalls Ancona's Greek origins. The city was founded by Greek exiles from Syracuse, and its people are still called «Dorici»; the name comes from the Greek word «ankon», elbow, for the shape of its bay. No surprise, then, that its cross is Greek and not Latin.

A flag from the East

Flag scholars speak of Byzantine colours. According to one reconstruction, the red flag with the golden cross was a gift from the emperor of Byzantium, Manuel Komnenos, in the twelfth century, when Ancona was a free commune and a maritime republic, with trading houses active in Constantinople and Alexandria in Egypt. After losing its independence in 1532, with annexation to the Papal States, the city replaced its flag with a simple yellow and red bicolour.

Taken up again in modern times

In the twentieth century Ancona went back to its old seafaring insignia and put them on its civic emblems, with the cross in Greek form. Today the red flag with the golden cross flies on the town hall and on the Lazzaretto, by the harbour, and accompanies the city in its festivals and anniversaries.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Ancona or with roots in the Doric city, for families who emigrated and people from the Marche around the world, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for sailing clubs, regattas and harbour festivals, for fans of Ancona's teams, for a seafood restaurant, a shop selling Marche products or a store in the centre, for the tourist who wants to take the golden cross home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
