Lapland Flag

The circle of the sun and the moon: the Sámi flag

This is the flag of the Sámi people, the people who live in the north of Norway, Sweden and Finland and in northern Russia, the lands also known as Lapland. It has four colours, red, green, yellow and blue, and a large circle straddling the bands, half blue and half red. It is not the flag of a state: it is the flag of a people, beyond borders.

Children of the sun

The flag was designed by the artist Astrid Båhl, from Skibotn in Norway, who gave it a title: «The Sámi are children of the sun». In the circle, the red part is the sun and the blue part is the moon. Red, yellow and blue are the most common colours of the gákti, the traditional Sámi dress, and green was added because it appears in the dress of the Southern Sámi.

Chosen from 74 designs

From the late 1970s the Sámi already used an informal red, yellow and blue flag, designed in 1977 by Synnøve Persen. The Sámi Council then announced a competition: 27 artists submitted 74 designs. On 15 August 1986 the 13th Sámi Conference, meeting in Åre, Sweden, unanimously chose the one by Astrid Båhl, which took up the colours already in use and added the green and the circle.

A flag for all Sámi

The Sámi Council calls it the flag of all Sámi, whatever country they live in. In Norway it was recognised in 2003; it also flies at the Sámi parliament. It should not be confused with the flags of the historical provinces of Lapland in Sweden and Finland, which bear a wild man with a golden club.

The days of the flag

The most important day is 6 February, the Sámi national day. Other flag days are 15 August, anniversary of its adoption, and the dates on which the Sámi parliaments were founded in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Who chooses it

For those with Sámi or Scandinavian roots, for anyone who has been to Lapland to see the northern lights or to travel among the reindeer, for Nordic associations and communities in Italy and Europe, for a school telling the story of Europe's indigenous peoples, for a multicultural event and for collectors of the flags of peoples and regions. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
