Description

Kastellorizo Flag

White and blue, with a cross, an anchor and a heart: the flag of Kastellorizo

This flag is white with a broad dark blue border. In the centre, all in dark blue, a cross and an anchor cross each other diagonally over a heart, with the anchor's cable looped around it. The words ΜΕΓΙΣΤΗ on the left and ΚΑΣΤΕΛΟΡΙΖΟ on the right curve around the emblem.

The flag of 1821

Flags of the World, quoting the book Hellenic Flags, says the flag used on Kastellorizo in 1821, during the Greek War of Independence, is white with a blue border, with a cross and a fouled anchor crossed per saltire over a heart, all in blue and surrounded by the blue writing ΜΕΓΙΣΤΗ on the left and ΚΑΣΤΕΛΟΡΙΖΟ on the right.

Faith, hope and love

The same source says the heart stands for love, the anchor for hope and the cross for faith.

The island

Kastellorizo, officially Megisti, is a Greek island and municipality of the Dodecanese in the eastern Mediterranean. It lies roughly 2 kilometres off the south coast of Turkey and 125 km east of Rhodes, almost halfway between Rhodes and Antalya, and is part of the Rhodes regional unit.

Today's flag

According to Flags of the World, the modern flag of Kastellorizo bears the same elements as the historical flag, a cross and a fouled anchor crossed per saltire over a heart, in brown, black and red, with the name above and below.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Kastellorizo or the Dodecanese, for those who live far away and carry their island with them, for the Municipality, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for sailors and divers who fell in love with the island, for a restaurant, a hotel or a business that wants to show where it belongs, and for collectors of flags of the Greek War of Independence. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
