Description

Heraklion Flag

Blue over white, with a red griffin: the flag of Heraklion

This flag is divided across the middle: blue above, white below, with a thin white and blue double stripe where they meet. A round red seal with a winged griffin and the word ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟΝ stands in the centre. Above it, in white on the blue, ΔΗΜΟΣ, and below, in blue on the white, ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟΥ: «Municipality of Heraklion».

The griffin

Flags of the World explains that the griffin, the grype of the ancient Greeks, is a chimeric eagle-lion, common in the ancient Cretan iconography. The writer of the entry says he could not identify the exact source of the griffin of the Heraklion emblem, and that an original found at the palace of Knossos would be logical.

Several versions

The same source lists three: a white flag with a red griffin seal; a light blue and white flag divided across with a thin fimbriation in the middle and a purple griffin on a white disc; and a variant of the second on a darker blue field with the more elaborate seal of the first. The flag shown here has the blue-and-white field and the lettered red seal.

The city

Heraklion is the largest city and capital of Crete, and the fourth largest city in Greece. For centuries it was known as Candia, a Venetian adaptation of the earlier Greek name Chandax. Its airport is named after the writer Nikos Kazantzakis and the ruins of Knossos, excavated and restored by Arthur Evans, are nearby. The municipality had 173,993 inhabitants in 2011.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Heraklion or Crete, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Municipality, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
