Guinea Flag

Red, yellow and green: the flag of Guinea

The flag of Guinea has three equal vertical bands, red on the hoist side, yellow in the middle and green on the outside. A tricolour that takes up the shape of the French one, but with the pan-African colours: the flag of the first country in French Africa to choose full independence.

The «no» of 1958

In 1958 Charles de Gaulle offered the French colonies a choice: independence or autonomy in partnership with France. Of them all, only Guinea voted to break every tie. Independence was proclaimed on 2 October 1958, and the flag was adopted soon after, on 10 November.

The colours of a party, of a continent

The Democratic Party of Guinea had been using those colours since 1954, to rally people to its programme. They were the same colours as Ethiopia, the oldest independent state in Africa, and Ghana, independent since 1957: with Guinea, red, yellow and green were becoming more and more the colours of a whole continent.

Work, justice, solidarity

The first president, Sékou Touré, explained the colours by linking them to the country's motto. Red is sacrifice and labour; yellow is Guinea's gold, the tropical sun and justice; green is the agricultural wealth of the land, farmed together, and so solidarity. Work, justice, solidarity: the motto and the flag are read together.

Not to be confused with Mali

The flag of Guinea looks very much like that of Mali, which has the same colours in reverse order, green, yellow and red starting from the hoist. The Presidency of Guinea also specifies the green: Guinea's is malachite green, and it recalls the savannah, the forests and the country's agricultural wealth. The 2025 Constitution, in Article 4, confirms the red, yellow and green tricolour in equal vertical bands.

Who chooses it

For anyone with Guinean roots living in Italy or elsewhere in Europe, for community associations and their celebrations, for 2 October, Independence Day, for fans of the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations, for a school or a multicultural event, for a model UN, for those who have worked or travelled in West Africa and for a collector. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
