Description

Gelderland Flag

Blue, yellow and black: the flag of Gelderland

This flag is a horizontal tricolour: blue at the top, yellow in the middle and black at the bottom, in three equal bands.

What the article says

According to the Dutch Wikipedia article the official wording is three horizontal bands of equal height, from top to bottom blue, yellow and black. The colours are given as Pantone 286 for the blue and Pantone 108 for the yellow. The Provincial States (Provinciale Staten) fixed the flag on 15 April 1953 and published the decision in the Provincial Gazette of Gelderland. The official ratio is 9:13; in practice 2:3 is used.

Colours from the arms

The three colours are derived from the arms of the province: the blue and gold come from the Gelre lion, and the black from the Gulik lion, which has been part of the arms since the 14th century.

What it might have been

Gelderland first wanted a blue, yellow and black flag with a duke's hat on the yellow band, to recall the old Duchy of Gelre. The High Council of Nobility (Hoge Raad van Adel) opposed putting a symbol on the tricolour, so the plain design was adopted. A 2014 survey found that about two thirds of the people of Gelderland did not know their flag.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Arnhem, Nijmegen, Apeldoorn or the Veluwe, or with roots in Gelderland and the Achterhoek; for those who live far away and carry their province with them; for clubs, associations and local businesses.
