Fribourg Flag

Black above, white below: the flag of the Canton of Fribourg

The flag of the Canton of Fribourg is made of just two horizontal bands: black above, white below. No coat of arms, no figure. It is one of the most essential flags in Switzerland, and for that very reason it is recognised from afar, by its two colours alone.

Written into the Constitution

The Constitution of the Canton of Fribourg says it in a few words, in article 2: the coat of arms is «per fess sable and argent». Per fess means divided horizontally, and silver, in heraldry, becomes white on the flag. The same article recalls that the capital is the city of Fribourg, Fribourg in French and Freiburg in German.

A Zähringen city

Fribourg was born in 1157, when Duke Berchtold IV of Zähringen founded the city in a bend of the Sarine. For centuries the city-state had two shields: one identical to today's flag, black and white, and another with a white castle on a blue field, which in 1803, when state and city were separated, remained the arms of the city. The black and white stayed with the canton.

The legend of charcoal and flour

No one knows for sure where the two colours come from, but in Fribourg a story is told. Duke Berchtold IV, lost during a hunt, is said to have spent the night in a charcoal burner's hut, sleeping on sacks of charcoal and flour. In the morning he came out soiled black and white, and decided to give those colours to his new city. The oldest known depiction of the flag is in a manuscript of 1410.

In the Confederation since 1481

In 1481, with the Covenant of Stans, Fribourg joined the Confederation. Thirty years later came a gift from the pope: in 1512 Pope Julius II gave Fribourg a banner, for its help in his campaigns, which that year drove the French out of Lombardy. Today Fribourg is a bilingual canton, where since 1991 French and German have equal standing, and the black and white flies on the 1st of August on both sides of the Sarine.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Fribourg, French- or German-speaking, and for those who left Fribourg, for a commune, a school or a club, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August national day, for fans of Fribourg's teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a mountain hut or a shop of Fribourg products, for visitors to the city on the Sarine. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
