Description

Florence Wool Guild (Arte della Lana) Flag

Blue, with the Lamb of God: the banner of the Arte della Lana

This banner is a blue field with a white lamb in the centre, a halo behind its head, holding a staff that carries a white pennant with a red cross. A thin blue and white striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

The most powerful guild

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte della Lana was one of the seven major guilds (Arti Maggiori) of Florence, among the most powerful and the one with the most workers: about a third of the Florentine population, according to the historian Giovanni Villani. The first surviving statute dates from 1317, and the guild grew rich enough to overtake even Calimala, until the Arte della Seta took the first place in the 1400s.

The Agnus Dei

The guild's arms showed the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) with the banner of the commune of Florence and a halo with an inscribed cross, on a blue field. In the arms as Italian Wikipedia describes them, a chief of Anjou with four lilies sits above the lamb; this banner does not carry that chief, only the lamb on plain blue.

Palace and patron

In 1308 the guild had its palace built behind the church of Orsanmichele; it is still there. Its patron saint was Saint Stephen, and Lorenzo Ghiberti made his statue for the guild's tabernacle at Orsanmichele (1427-1428). In 1331 the Signoria gave the guild the care of the Opera del Duomo, the works of the cathedral. The guild was suppressed in 1770 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold.

Who chooses it

For lovers of Florence and its history, for wool and fabric makers and sellers, knitwear brands, shepherds and farms, for churches and religious groups fond of the Lamb of God, for historical re-enactment groups and parades, for museums, shops and collectors of Florentine heraldry. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
