Description

Florence Woodworkers' Guild (Arte dei Legnaioli) Flag

White, with an uprooted tree and a red chest: the banner of the Arte dei Legnaioli

This banner is a white field with a leafy green tree in the centre, pulled up with its roots showing, and a red wooden chest drawn across the trunk. A thin red and white striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

The guild of the woodworkers

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Legnaioli was one of the Arti Minori of Florence. It brought together the craftsmen of wood: joiners, sawyers, wood carriers, chest and cabinet makers, painters of chests and furniture, bowl makers, saddle-frame makers and the makers of barrels and grain measures. Builders' carpenters were left out; they belonged to the Maestri di Pietra e Legname.

The arms

The arms are given as «d'argento all'albero fronzuto e sradicato al naturale con un cassone di legno su tutto»: a silver (white) field with a leafy tree uprooted in natural colours, with a wooden chest over all. A picture on Italian Wikipedia shows the guild's arms on a house in Piazza Mentana, a square once called piazza delle Travi because the logs carried down the Arno from the Mugello and Casentino were gathered there.

History and patrons

The oldest register of members dates from 1280 and the first statute from 1301, when the guild met in the cloister of Santo Stefano al Ponte. It took Saint Stephen as its protector and was also devoted to the Virgin Mary, celebrating the Annunciation on 25 March, the Florentine New Year. In 1534 it joined the Università dei Fabbricanti and it was finally suppressed in 1770.

A famous member

A member known from literature is Grasso legnaiolo, the woodworker who is the main character of a tale together with the famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi.
