Description

Florence Wine Merchants' Guild (Arte dei Vinattieri) Flag

White with a red chalice: the banner of the Arte dei Vinattieri

This banner is a white field with one large red goblet in the centre, drawn with a dark outline and a hand-inked texture. A thin red and white striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

The wine merchants' guild

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Vinattieri was one of the Arti Minori of Florence. The wine merchants first joined the bakers and the innkeepers, but in 1288 they split off and formed a guild of their own. It was run by four consuls, in office for four months, helped by twelve councillors and a notary.

The red chalice

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'argento al calice di rosso»: a silver (white) field with a red chalice. That is what this banner shows; the exact shape of the cup is the artist's.

A statute in plain language

The oldest statute that has come down to us dates from 1339 and is kept in the State Archives. It was written on parchment, bound with leather strips and iron studs, and, more importantly, in the vernacular so that every member could understand it. Its rules covered the opening hours of taverns, the ban on gambling and dice in them, and a minimum distance from churches and convents.

Seat and end

The first seat was the church of San Martino al Vescovo; later the guild moved to what is now Palazzo Bartolommei in via Lambertesca, where a small worn coat of arms remains over the doorway. In 1534 it joined the Università dei Linaioli, and in 1770 all the guilds were suppressed by Peter Leopold.
