Description

Florence Oil Merchants' and Grocers' Guild (Arte degli Oliandoli e Pizzicagnoli) Flag

A red lion and an olive branch: the banner of the Arte degli Oliandoli e Pizzicagnoli

This banner is a white field with a red rampant lion holding a green olive branch in its forepaws.

Oil sellers and grocers

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte degli Oliandoli e Pizzicagnoli was one of the Arti Minori of Florence. It was officially born in 1338, when the existing guilds of the oliandoli (oil sellers), the salaroli (sellers of cured meats and salted fish) and the caciaroli (cheese sellers) came together. The oliandoli sold oil by retail, mostly local, in the typical orciolini, jars holding about 33 litres; the pizzicagnoli were the retailers of what today would be called delicatessen: cheeses, pork sausages, salted and dried meat and fish, lard, and everyday kitchen and household goods.

The arms

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'argento al leone di rosso tenente un ramo di olivo verde nelle branche»: a silver field with a red lion holding a green olive branch in its paws. The banner shows this design. The page notes that after 1534 a different insignia was used by the Università di Por San Piero, a red rampant lion on a gold field with a white lily, and that is not the design shown here.

Patron and seat

The guild chose Saint Bartholomew, feasted on 24 August, as its patron. In December, after the new oil was pressed, oil was offered in the church of Santa Maria degli Ughi to feed the votive lamps of the Virgin. The guild's own residence on via Pellicceria, near the Monte di Pietà, was demolished during the «risanamento»; fragments are now in the Museo Bardini and the Museo di San Marco. Pietro Leopoldo suppressed all the guilds in 1770.
