Description

Florence Cloth Merchants' Guild (Arte di Calimala) Flag

Red, with a gold eagle and a bale of cloth: the banner of the Arte di Calimala

This banner is a red field with a gold eagle in the centre, wings spread, gripping in its claws a white bale of cloth bound with cords. A thin striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

The guild of the merchants

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Mercatanti, better known as Arte di Calimala, was one of the seven major guilds (Arti Maggiori) of Florence. It takes its name from via Calimala, in the centre of the city, where many of its shops stood. The first news of the guild dates from about 1182, which makes the Florentine merchants among the first to form a guild.

The eagle and the torsello

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «di rosso, all'aquila d'oro afferrante un torsello d'argento»: a red field, with a gold eagle gripping a silver bale of cloth (torsello). The guild's seat in via Calimaruzza still shows the gilded eagle gripping a bale.

Power and patronage

In 1323 the guild showed its strength by arming 200 men at its own expense, who fought against Castruccio Castracani under the banner of the guild. It looked after the Baptistery of San Giovanni from 1157, and its patron saint was John the Baptist, whose statue by Lorenzo Ghiberti (1413-1416) stands in the guild's niche at Orsanmichele. The guild was suppressed in 1770 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold.
