Description

Florence Butchers' Guild (Arte dei Beccai) Flag

Gold, with a black ram rampant: the banner of the Arte dei Beccai

This banner is a gold (ochre) field with a black ram standing on its hind legs, with curved horns, drawn in the centre. A thin diagonally striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

The butchers' guild

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Beccai (the butchers) was one of the fourteen Arti Minori of Florence. Its members were butchers, fishmongers and the keepers of inns and taverns. It never became one of the major guilds, but in 1285 it sat for a time among the middle guilds, and its members were feared as quarrelsome in the street fights of the city.

The ram on gold

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'oro al montone saliente di nero»: a gold field with a black ram rampant. That is what this banner shows.

The seat and the saint

From 1318 all the beccai met in one shop near Santa Maria Sopra Porta and some years later the guild built its own seat, still visible opposite Orsanmichele. Its patron saint was Saint Peter, whose statue in one of the outer niches of Orsanmichele is attributed to Brunelleschi or Donatello and dated about 1412.

Rules of the trade

The guild statute regulated meat prices, forbade selling together cuts from different animals, and required scales and weights to be checked and stamped with the city seal.

Who chooses it

For lovers of Florence and its history, for butchers, delicatessens, steakhouses and restaurants (the bistecca alla fiorentina is still the city's famous dish), for historical re-enactment groups and parades, for museums and collectors of Florentine heraldry. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
