Florence Blacksmiths' Guild (Arte dei Fabbri) Flag

Black tongs on a pale field: the banner of the Arte dei Fabbri

This banner is a very pale lavender-white field with a large pair of black blacksmith's tongs set diagonally, drawn in a hand-made style.

The guild of the iron workers

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Fabbri was one of the Arti Minori, the lesser guilds of Florence. It brought together everyone who worked iron: blacksmiths, farriers, buckle-makers, swordsmiths, cutlers and makers of helmets. The guild met in the church of Santo Stefano al Ponte until 1386. Its first surviving statute dates from 1344, with additions up to 1529, and it laid down, among other things, the amount of metal to be used for each object.

Tongs in bend

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'argento, alla tenaglia al naturale posta in banda»: a silver field with a pair of tongs in natural colour placed diagonally, in bend. That is the charge this banner shows.

Two patron saints

The blacksmiths chose both San Zanobi, one of Florence's oldest saints, and Sant'Eligio, whose statue was commissioned from Nanni di Banco for the guild's tabernacle at Orsanmichele. Every master put his own seal on his work, registered in the guild's book of trademarks.

The end of the guild

In 1534 the Arte dei Fabbri joined the Università dei Fabbricanti, and Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo definitively suppressed it in 1770.
